Update - November 2024

On Nov. 19, council members received a staff report on the Council Composition and Ward Boundary Review exercise and selected Option 2 for new boundaries.

If the related bylaw is approved by council in December, the new boundaries would come into effect for the 2026-2030 term of council.

Background

Here's what we are doing...

We are conducting a Council Composition and Ward Boundary Review.

The purpose of the review is to ensure that residents have equitable access to their elected representatives.

The current situation...

  • Gravenhurst uses a five ward system.
  • The residents of each ward elect a councillor to represent them on town council.
  • The mayor and three district councillors are elected at-large by all the residents of the town. The mayor and district councillors sit on town council and at district council.

Based on what the review determines, council could chose to maintain the status quo or make changes.

These changes could involve adjustments to existing ward boundaries, the creation of new wards, or the establishment of fewer wards. Another option would be to dissolve all wards and move to an at-large system.
